Tea Kabuki: Learning from a Tea Master
Hello! This is Akamatsu from Shirasagi Sabo. In this blog, I'll explain what the "Chakabuki" workshop is all about.
What is Chakabuki?
It is a type of tea-tasting game that has been around since the Kamakura period.
However, in the Muromachi period, its aspect as gambling became stronger, and it has a history of being prohibited by the shogunate. (Incidentally, there are various theories about the origin of "Kabuki," and while detailed historical documents don't seem to remain, it is said to have come from its popularity among Kabuki actors.)
Also, although experiences called Chakabuki are held in various places across Japan, there is no standardized method.
So, what kind of Chakabuki do we offer at Shirasagi Sabo? We hold it as an introductory Chakabuki, making it easy for even those unfamiliar with tea to participate casually.
We provide easy-to-understand explanations of the aromatic and flavor characteristics of three types of tea: "Sencha, Fukamushi Sencha, and Kabusecha," accompanied by tasting.
Furthermore, since you can learn "how to brew delicious tea using a teapot" which can be replicated at home, it is also suitable for those who want to re-evaluate their daily tea-drinking habits. You can understand the profound depth of tea, which changes with water temperature and steeping time, through practical experience.
Below are comments from past participants.
My first Chakabuki experience. Choosing between three types felt like it would be easy, but I found myself in a maze. It was a delightful challenge, and I would definitely like to participate again if given the chance.

The sound of "Chakabuki" was very appealing and piqued my interest! When I actually experienced it, Akamatsu-san explained the profound depth and delicate aspects of tea in a very clear way. Having tea brewed right in front of me and being able to enjoy teas from all over Japan made it an exciting and truly enjoyable event! I would like to participate again. (Adult, female)
I was able to try tea tasting, which often seems intimidating, in a very fun and casual way. First, I received a very clear explanation of the three types of tea, their varieties, production regions, production methods, characteristics, how to distinguish tea leaves, and how to enjoy them. Afterwards, as a game to guess the brand of tea that was brewed with the varieties hidden, I got to output the information I had just learned, allowing me to review how to identify and enjoy tea on the spot, making tea feel much more familiar. I want to do it again! (Adult, female)
After learning that each tea has a different taste and aroma, I had to guess the brand of tea, and I was happy that I could guess it correctly. The initial explanation was easy to understand, and I want to try it again. (Middle school student, male)
